- History: Fractal's parents were originally arrived on Earth in 1947 and eventually found employment at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in a top secret division overseen by the CIA. They worked on both physics research and development of new nuclear weapon designs. Fractal grew up with other Hoomiku and was cared for by her parents as much as was physically possible. In 1986, her parents were killed following accidental exposure to fatal radiation levels during an experiment ordered by the CIA to research telepathy blocking techniques. Both died in front of Fractal, who refused to leave their side in the infirmary. She was placed in the care of foster parents following the accident. While she never considered them her new parents, she did return their affection and was polite, but continued to be deeply wounded by the loss of her parents.
In 1989, the New York Times leaked classified information given by CIA analyst Jack Thornwell regarding the extent and details of the projects involving the Hoomiku held by the United States. The Thornwell leak is considered the defining moment when rumors of aliens form into fact, as he divulged major details about the Hoomiku, including crimes committed by the United States and Soviet Union towards them. President George H. W. Bush eventually acknowledges the species in 1990 under growing pressure from both Congress and the press, a move followed shortly by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The United Nations General Assembly drafts Resolution 45/77, defining both the rights of Hoomiku to both basic laws and defining the security and privacy of thought as a basic human right. Given that a breeding population exists on Earth, they are not in danger of dying out. The public is shocked, but no massive social upheaval occurs. Several hate crimes do occur, however, and prompt legislation with regards to both the use of telepathy in certain situations and locations and provide the basis for a lawsuit filed by several hundred Hoomiku against the United States. The suit is ruled in favor of the Hoomiku and as a result, Fractal is entitled to a free college education, a house, and $40,000 on her 18th birthday. She attends New Mexico Tech and briefly works as a DJ at a local radio station. Eventually, she transferred to New Mexico University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in both botany and physics.
Following graduation, she began to work at a start-up in Albuquerque studying new techniques for indoor crop growth. In 2006, she traveled to Russia for research into farming techniques studied by the Russian Federal Space Agency. There she met Ian Rubin in Star City, and the two hit it off and began dating until Ian's flight to the International Space Station on September 18, 2006. The two resumed their relationship following the flight and in December, Fractal moved to Louisiana. The two marry on December 23, 2007.
