STS-5V is a flight of the Space Shuttle Constitution, scheduled to fly no earlier than September 15, 2009. The mission will test newly developed systems for the Space Shuttle program, including a new design of External Tank as well as newly designed Liquid Rocket Boosters (LRBs) which are slated to offer better reliability and thrust. The mission will also be the first launch from Space Launch Complex 7 (SLC-7), should STS-505 not be required.
Crew
There is no crew currently scheduled for this flight, which is expected to be an unmanned test flight of new Shuttle systems.
Mission parameters
- Mass: TBD
- Perigee: TBD
- Apogee: TBD
- Inclination: TBD
- Period: TBD
Mission payload
- Next Generation Development Flight Instrumentation (NextGen DFI) package
The only scheduled payload for this flight is the NextGen DFI package, which will test the stresses associated with the newly developed LRBs and new design of External Tank.
Alternate payload options
Due to the nature of the flight, there are no plans at this time for a test of remote satellite deployment systems which would allow for a commercial or military satellite payload on the mission.
