STS-12W (Echo construction flight ECF-1) was a Space Shuttle mission which launched from the Mid-Pacific Launch Center on May 10, 2010. The mission, flown by Space Shuttle Liberty, carried its external tank to a circular orbit where modifications were carried out to turn the tank into a wet workshop.

The mission included a number of firsts, most notable being the first flight of an Australian citizen and the first openly gay astronaut to fly into space. This was also the first time that a shuttle launched from SLC-1C at the Mid-Pacific Launch Center.

Mission timeline

March 15 (Flight Day 1: Launch)

Patriot launched successfully at 06:35:00 UTC-12 (18:35:00 UTC). Once in orbit the crew opened the payload bay doors, activated the radiators and deployed the Ku band antenna. Daniel Baxter and Jack Spencer then proceeded to activate and check out of the Remote Manipulator System (SRMS) and then conducted a survey of the payload bay. The crew was also successful in down-linking imagery and video of the external tank to the ground.

Wake-up calls

A tradition for NASA human spaceflights since the days of Gemini, mission crews are played a special musical track at the start of each day in space. Each track is specially chosen, often by their families, and usually has a special meaning to an individual member of the crew, or is applicable to their daily activities.
